Stony Point Evaluation & Learning Center is pleased to offer Adult ADHD Assessments, which consist of a two-hour testing session, a feedback meeting, and a detailed report with personalized recommendations.
Why Might an Adult Need ADHD Testing?
While ADHD is often identified during childhood or adolescence, numerous adults continue to experience its symptoms without having received an official diagnosis. There are several reasons why someone might reach adulthood without being diagnosed with ADHD.
Awareness and understanding of ADHD have significantly evolved over the years. In the past, ADHD was primarily associated with hyperactive behavior in young boys, leading to underdiagnosis in girls and those with inattentive symptoms. As a result, many individuals who did not fit the stereotypical profile may have been overlooked.
Some adults may have developed coping mechanisms that mask their symptoms. They might have learned to compensate for their difficulties through strategies such as excessive organization or reliance on external reminders, which can make the symptoms less apparent to others.
Additionally, the symptoms of ADHD can sometimes be mistaken for other issues, such as anxiety or depression, leading to misdiagnosis or a focus on treating these other conditions instead. This can delay the recognition of ADHD as the underlying issue.
Also, societal expectations and changes in life circumstances can also bring ADHD symptoms to the forefront. For instance, the transition to college, starting a new job, or managing family responsibilities can overwhelm an individual’s coping strategies, making the symptoms more noticeable and prompting a reevaluation. Overall, the combination of evolving diagnostic criteria, personal coping strategies, and life changes can contribute to why some adults may not receive an ADHD diagnosis until later in life.
