Understanding Autism

Autism is a natural variation in human neurodevelopment, reflecting the diverse ways people think, communicate, and interact with the world. It is not a disorder to be “fixed,” but a different way of being that brings its own strengths and challenges. Autism is often referred to by different names, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), being “on the spectrum,” and, in the past, terms like Asperger’s Syndrome. Each of these terms reflects the broad range of experiences and abilities within the autism community.

The Importance of Comprehensive Autism Testing

Autism can sometimes present in subtle ways, particularly in individuals who are highly skilled at masking their traits or those assigned female at birth. These presentations might be overlooked by providers who are not specifically trained to identify them. Additionally, there may be co-occurring conditions that need to be assessed, such as ADHD, giftedness, or twice-exceptionality (2e), which refers to individuals who are both gifted and have a learning difference. Here’s why our comprehensive assessments are essential:

  1. Recognizing Unique Presentations: Autism is a spectrum, and its characteristics can vary widely. Some individuals may exhibit more subtle signs, such as those who are adept at masking or those assigned female at birth. Our team is trained to recognize these nuanced presentations, ensuring that each person’s unique experience is understood and valued.
  2. Personalized Support for Every Individual: Understanding the diverse ways autism presents in each person allows us to provide personalized support and recommendations. Whether your child is a young student or a young adult, we tailor our approach to honor their individuality and help them thrive in their own way.
  3. Early and Affirming Recognition: Early recognition of autism can open doors to resources and support that enhance development and well-being. Our comprehensive assessments aim to identify autism as early and accurately as possible, empowering families to access the tools and strategies that best support their loved ones.
  4. Empowering Families and Educators: Our assessments provide valuable insights that help families and educators create supportive and inclusive environments. We offer guidance and resources to help you understand and nurture your child’s unique abilities, fostering a positive atmosphere for growth and acceptance.

Our Assessment Process

At Stony Point Evaluation & Learning Center, our process is thorough and affirming:

  • Initial Consultation: We begin with a conversation to learn about your child’s history, interests, and unique ways of interacting with the world.
  • Behavioral and Social Assessments: We conduct assessments to understand social communication and interaction patterns, focusing on the individual’s strengths and unique traits.
  • Neurocognitive Testing: We assess neurocognitive functions such as memory, visual-spatial processing, verbal processing, auditory processing, processing speed, problem-solving, and executive functioning to understand your child’s processing skills.
  • Review of Educational Records/Teacher Input: We reach out to your child’s teachers to gather insights and observations from the classroom setting, which is crucial for qualifying for specific accommodations/supports in school.
