Psychoeducational Evaluation
When a student is having difficulties at school, a psychoeducational evaluation can uncover the root causes of their struggles. The main goal of this evaluation is to understand the student’s strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning.
During this evaluation, our psychologists will determine if there are processing difficulties, learning disorders (e.g., dyslexia) and/or attentional disorders (e.g., ADHD) that could be affecting their performance. After the evaluation, we provide recommendations to support their learning and academic success.
These kinds of evaluations are often needed if your child wants to apply for accommodations in universities or standardized tests like the SAT or ACT. Even college students and adults seeking accommodations for higher education or graduate exams, like the GRE, can benefit from these evaluations.
During the evaluation, we’ll look at different things like how well they think, remember information, and handle academic tasks. We may also check their attention and problem-solving skills, and how they’re doing emotionally and socially. The goal is to get a complete picture of their abilities and find the best ways to help them succeed in their education.
DEVELOPMENTAL EVALUATION (AGE 3 - PK)
Our psychologists will do a thorough evaluation with your child to understand how they are doing in different areas of development. This will involve talking with you to know your concerns and experiences with your child. We will also measure their thinking and reasoning abilities, look at their behavior and social skills, see how they use language, and check their fine and gross motor skills. We will also see how well they are progressing in reaching important milestones for their age.
During the evaluation, we will also look at their emotional well-being, like if they are feeling anxious or having mood issues, and check for any neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD, autism, or language processing concerns.
PSYCHOLOGICAL/SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL Evaluation
Our psychologists also complete comprehensive psychological evaluations, which include social, emotional, and behavioral assessment for children, adolescents, and adults. The purpose of this evaluation is to better understand underlying factors impacting a person’s ability to function adaptively in the home, school, or community setting. This is often a recommendation made by a treatment provider (e.g., therapist, psychiatrist) to clarify diagnosis (e.g., ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar, OCD, etc.) and to help determine the best course of treatment.
Autism Evaluation (children and adolescents)
An autism evaluation is a process to help us to better understand your child and learn about how they experience, process, and respond to the world around them. This includes understanding their communication style, interests, social relationships, sensory processing, and coping styles to deal with overwhelming emotions/experiences. We also seek to understand HOW they process information and how that may contribute to misunderstandings with others. We will also assess for emotional difficulties (e.g., mood disorders, anxiety disorders) that can may co-occur with autism or be mistaken for autism. The goal of this evaluation is not a diagnosis (or not) of autism. Instead, it helps us to better understand why a child may have certain social or emotional difficulties and learn how to best support them.
ADMISSIONS/GIFTED TESTING
Our psychologists also provide admissions testing for school application and placement. This is a requirement of many independent schools and typically involves administration of an intellectual assessment such as the WPPSI-IV or WISC-V.
EDUCATIONAL THERAPY
We also offer educational therapy support students who have executive functioning challenges. Our goal is to have them become confident and independent learners who have the tools necessary to reach their potential.
During our 12-week program, we provide individualized instruction to address specific needs. We work on important skills like paying attention, remembering information, planning, organizing, managing emotions, time management, setting goals, and study techniques. These skills are essential for success in school and beyond.
Our Certified Professional Educational Therapist is highly trained to create personalized plans that combine academic strategies with social-emotional support. We believe that improved executive function (thinking and organizing abilities) is connected to emotional well-being, so we also include “Mindful Minutes” in each session. These moments focus on positive coping strategies and ways to reduce stress.
